Military drill in Taiwan Strait: The meeting between visiting Taiwanese President and the US House Speaker on Thursday April 6 has miffed China and it has reacted strongly. China on its part officially announced on Saturday April 8 that it is beginning three-day military drills in the Taiwan Strait. A spokesman of The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command said ‘United Sharp Sword’ would run from April 8 to 10 for “combat preparedness”.
Meanwhile, the Taiwan defence ministry said it detected 13 Chinese aircraft and three warships around the island.
‘Wrong and dangerous road’
China’s belligerence can be gauged by it shrill remark on US saying it was on a “wrong and dangerous road.”
For the record, Speaker Kevin McCarthy hosted Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday in a show of support for the self-governed island, which China claims as its own. The Speaker was accompanied by a bipartisan delegation of more than a dozen US lawmakers.
Nothing provocative, says Biden
Meanwhile, the Biden administration says there is nothing provocative about the visit by Tsai, which is the latest of a series of visits to the US. Yet it comes at a time when US-China relationship has hit historic lows. US support for Taiwan is one of the main points of difference between the two powers, according to news reports.
Earlier in August 2022 Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had said had asserted that the government should promote peaceful development of relations with Taiwan and advance the process of China’s “peaceful reunification”.
China, which claims democratic Taiwan as its own territory, has increased its military activity near the island over the past three years, responding to what it calls “collusion” between Taipei and Washington, Taiwan’s main international backer and arms supplier.
In August, China had also staged war games around Taiwan in response to a visit to Taipei by then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
