China: Wall Street Journal says China has reached a secret deal with Cuba to build a spy base on the island. Cuba is 100 miles from Florida, home to the US Central Command.John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House says the report is inaccurate. He declined to point out which portions of this news were incorrect.WSJ also says that in return Beijing is providing billions of dollars to Havana to tide over its economic crisis.Kirby also said the United States has “real concerns” about the China-Cuba relationship.Brigadier Patrick Ryder of the Defence Department said, “We are not aware of China and Cuba developing a new type of spy station.”
The Cuban government termed the news report “totally mendacious and unfounded.” Cuban Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said this report is aimed at justifying the continuing US embargo on the island nation. Cuba rejects all foreign presence in the Caribbean, pointed out the Minister.Wall Street Journal said US officials have declined to give more details on where the spy station is located or whether construction has begun.
US-China tensions
The WSJ report comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing.In February this year, the US military shot down a Chinese “spy balloon” on the East Coast. Beijing said the balloon was conducting experiments and had drifted into the American skies.

China says Washington uses Taiwan to spy on the former. The US regularly flies spy planes over the South China Sea and near Taiwan to eavesdrop on Beijing.
An old foe
Cuba is an old foe of the US. It was formerly a Communist nation and in 1962 allowed the Soviet Union to place its nuclear missiles on Cuban soil.Later, the Soviets removed their missiles from Cuba.
