Global politics: Even as Russia notches up success in its internecine war against Ukraine, China stands to gain since it will help the Asian giant reshape its geo-political power and help propel China’s role as an economic and military power-house, according to Chinese media reports.
It may be recalled that when Putin and Xi Ping met during the Winter Olympics in Beijing, the two issued a joint document stressing on reshaping global politics.
China’s involvement in Ukraine war
According to researchers, countries try and intervene in conflict zones when they think their involvement will result in positive assertions for the interlocutor. This, it is believed, is one of the main reasons for China to get more involved in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
This needs to be seen in the backdrop of the joint statement being issued barely a month after the Chinese balloon was allegedly shot down by US for being used to spy on the latter.
Further, according to the researcher Allen, Russia has been trying to shore up military support from allies like North Korea and Belarus. He says that Russia would welcome any arms support from China at this crucial juncture.
Long-term benefits, risks
Whether China would get more deeply involved in supporting Russia by giving arms in the Ukraine war is being seen in the backdrop of factoring in potential long-term benefits, risks and influence of western powers.
It is strongly estimated that despite the costs of war, China is seriously mulling over the option of supplying Russia military hardware.
What has further fuelled speculations is that following the meeting between China and Russia’s foreign ministers on March 2, 2023, the Chinese government released a statement saying the two countries have maintained sound and steady development, setting a new paradigm for a new type of major-country relationship.
Another possibility is that if Putin had won the Ukraine war in a lightning strike, it could have paved the way for China to commit a similar invasion of Taiwan, says Taiwanese media reports. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has openly warned China to be ready to face the consequences if it gets involved in the Ukraine war zone.
