China Protests: Apple has accelerated preparations to relocate production out of China in response to recent protests, particularly in China’s Zhengzhou ‘iPhone City’ plant. The protests prompted Apple to make plans to relocate its manufacturing to Asia, specifically India and Vietnam.
As per Wall Street Journal, Apple is also aiming to minimise its reliance on Taiwanese assemblers led by Foxconn Technology Group.
According to sources, a Foxconn factory in China’s Zhengzhou employs over 300,000 people to manufacture iPhones and other Apple products. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Zhengzhou alone accounted for approximately 85 percent of the iPhone Pro portfolio at one point.

Violent demonstrations at Zhengzhou
In late November, violent demonstrations erupted at Foxconn’s largest iPhone production in Zhengzhou. Several social media posts showed workers demonstrating over salaries and working conditions at Apple’s China iPhone facility.
Hundreds of Foxconn employees demonstrated in Zhengzhou, China. The uprising was sparked by accusations of underpaid salaries and the plant’s strict COVID-19 restrictions. Workers were seen breaking surveillance CCTVs with sticks in some of the protest films that circulated on the internet.
As the situation deteriorated, Foxconn issued an official statement in which it apologised. The incident was caused by a “technical fault,” according to the Apple supplier.

Delay in the arrival of iPhone 14 Pro models
Apple has revealed a delay in the arrival of iPhone 14 Pro models. The “COVID-19 restrictions have temporarily disrupted the major iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly facilities situated in Zhengzhou, China,” according to the business. “Currently, the facility is running at a drastically reduced capacity. We are emphasizing the health and safety of our supply chain workers, as we have done during the COVID-19 outbreak.”
