Beijing has pledged to ‘reunify’ Taiwan with China even as the US pledged more military support to the island nation.
AP News reported that the US has announced a $345 million military aid to Taiwan. This is “the Biden administration’s first major package drawing on America’s own stockpiles to help Taiwan counter China,” says AP.
Late Saturday, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office issued a statement opposing American military aid to Taiwan.
Beijing vows to annexe
China’s spokesperson for Taiwan Affairs Office said, “No matter how much of the ordinary people’s taxpayer money the … Taiwanese separatist forces spend, no matter how many U.S. weapons, it will not shake our resolve to solve the Taiwan problem. Or shake our firm will to realize the reunification of our motherland.”
Taiwan split from China in 1949 after a civil war. Since then, Beijing has never recognized Taiwan as an independent country.
Beijing also charged the United States with turning the island nation into an ammunition dump.
The spokesperson said, “Their actions are turning Taiwan into a powder keg and ammunition depot, aggravating the threat of war in the Taiwan Strait.”
In recent years, the People’s Liberation Army of China has increased its military exercises around the island, sending hundreds of warships and fighter aircraft in the Taiwan Strait.
‘For self defence’
Taiwan’s department of defence said on Sunday that it had tracked six Chinese ships near the island. It also said that military assistance is an important tool to support Taiwan’s self defence.
Taipei also pledged to promote “peace, stability and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.”
American lawmakers have been forcing the Administration to send weapons to Taiwan on priority. They want that Taipei should have enough weapons to deter China from any invasion.
