SCO Meet: On Tuesday, the Chinese President also called upon the SCO members to ensure “regional peace.” He also urged the member countries to crack down on terrorism through concerted efforts.
Addressing the 23rd summit of the Shanghai Cooperative Organization, President Xi Jinping urged the member states to respect each other’s concerns.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization comprised a few Central Asian countries and is committed to ensuring security and stability in the region.
The 23rd SCO summit is being chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Veiled attack
President Xi Jinping used this opportunity to once again attack the US for its “interference” in various matters affecting “Asian security.” However, he didn’t take the name of the United States in his attack.
“We should keep in mind the overall and long-term interests of our region, and make our foreign policies independently. We must be highly vigilant against external attempts to foment a new ‘Cold War’ or camp-based confrontation in our region,” President X told the meeting.
This year’s SCO is also being attended by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Iranian [President Ebrahim Eraisi.
Pakistan is also a member country of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Referring to Washington indirectly, the Chinese President said, “We must resolutely reject any interference in our internal affairs and the instigation of ‘colour revolutions’ by any country under whatever pretext. The future of our development must be held firmly in our own hands.”
Cracking down on terrorism
China also expects the SCO to crack down on East Turkistan terrorism. The East Turkistan Islamic Movement regularly conducts terrorist operations in China’s Xinjiang region, which has a significant Muslim population.
“We need to upgrade SCO security cooperation and continue to conduct joint operations. We should crack down hard on the forces of terrorism, separatism and extremism such as the ‘East Turkistan’ elements, drug trafficking, and cyber and transnational organised crimes,” Xi told the meeting.
