A third five-year term as president of China was awarded to leader Xi Jinping on Friday, putting him on track to remain in power for the life.
The ceremonial National People’s Congress’ approval of Xi’s appointment was expected for a leader who, since assuming office in 2012, has suppressed future rivals and filled the upper levels of the ruling Communist Party with his friends.
The NPC, whose members are chosen by the ruling party, voted in favour of Xi 2,952 to 0.
In October, Xi, 69, had himself elected to a third five-year term as party general secretary, breaking with Chinese custom that called for the transfer of power every ten years. The Chinese constitution’s earlier deletion of a two-term limit on the figurehead presidency led to speculation that he may hold onto power for life.
No candidate lists were provided, and it was assumed that Xi and the other candidates ran unchallenged. The election procedure is still largely cloaked in secrecy.
Also, the 2 million-member People’s Liberation Army, which officially obeys party rather than national directives, was unanimously appointed under Xi as its leader.
