Taiwan Strait: India Today reports that a Chinese destroyer came very close to a US warship in the Taiwan Strait. This warship was part of a US-Canadian Navy joint exercise that took place on Saturday, May 3.China later accused the United States for “deliberately provoking risk” in the region. US military officials aware of the incident said that the Chinese military ship came within 150 yards (137 metres) of the American ship Cheung-Hoon.China has always opposed the US Navy from coming into the Taiwan Strait. This narrow body of water separates Taiwan from China. Beijing claims Taiwan is part of China. However, Taiwan says it is an independent sovereign state.
Taiwan broke away as an independent country after the Nationalist forces of the Republic of China were defeated by the People’s Republic of China in 1949.The US says it will defend Taiwan against China in the event of a war.

US-China tensions
Both countries have had several standoffs in recent months.Last year, a Chinese balloon was spotted in the American skies. The White House alleged this balloon was sent by China to spy over the United States. Later, the United States Air Force shot this balloon down.In May 2023, a Chinese fighter aircraft came very close to a US Airforce plane in the South China Sea. While Beijing didn’t refer to this incident, it claimed that the US “frequently deployed aircraft and vessels for close-in reconnaissance on China, which poses a serious danger to China’s national security.”
Relations between the US and China
The US has accused China of spreading its footprint in the Pacific Ocean, thereby risking the peace in the region.In response, China is supporting Russia against Ukraine, which many people believe is backed by the US.
