On Sunday, Armed rebels attacked a convoy of Chinese engineers in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The port city of Gwadar, where all routes are still barred to traffic, is reportedly filled with gunshots and explosions.
The attack on Chinese engineers in Gwadar has finally been confirmed by the government, according to the report. According to The Balochistan Post, which cited a media release, the attack on the convoy of Chinese engineers started around 9:30 am, and a fierce shootout has been going on for almost two hours.
The attack took place close to Gwadar’s Faqeer Colony.
The incident has not been assigned a perpetrator by any group. According to local media sources, authorities have placed the city on high alert and have reportedly restricted access and leave.
In May of last year, a minibus carrying employees from the China-built Confucius Institute at Karachi University was attacked by a burqa-clad Baloch woman suicide bomber who also killed three Chinese nationals (tutors). The attack, the first significant one against Chinese people working in Pakistan last year, was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).
A bus transporting engineers was bombed in northwest Pakistan in July 2021. Nine Chinese employees were among the thirteen fatalities.
Under pressure, Pakistan paid the families of the deceased Chinese labourers millions of compensation. To investigate the attack, China sent a team.
Four people were murdered and numerous more were injured in a suicide bombing in April 2021 at a posh hotel in Quetta that was housing the Chinese ambassador. The representative was unharmed.
Baloch insurgents stormed Pakistan’s Stock Exchange earlier in 2020, where the Chinese have significant assets. This came after a 2018 attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi.
