Prominent government scientist stated on Saturday that the probability of a major Covid-19 rebound in China over the next two or three months is remote because 80% of the population has been infected. According to a National Health Commission official, the number of Covid patients in China’s fever clinics, ERs, and with critical conditions has risen.
According to Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a second Covid wave is unlikely in the near future despite the possibility that the pandemic may spread due to the large number of people travelling during the current Lunar New Year holiday period, boosting infections in some areas.
As a result of newly relaxed Covid restrictions, hundreds of millions of Chinese are travelling across the country for holiday reunions, raising concerns about new outbreaks in rural areas that are less prepared to handle major outbreaks.

60,000 Covid patients had died in hospitals as of January 12
According to a National Health Commission official, the number of Covid patients in China’s fever clinics, ERs, and with serious conditions has peaked. According to official data, about 60,000 Covid patients had died in hospitals as of January 12 a month after China abruptly dropped its zero-Covid policy.
However, other experts claimed that number likely grossly underplays the full impact because it doesn’t include people who pass away at home and because many medical professionals have stated they are discouraged from listing Covid as a cause of death.
