Cyclone Michaung, currently intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, has led to substantial rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Northern coastal areas, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore districts, have experienced heavy downpours, causing flooding in low-lying regions. Chennai police reported three deaths in rain-related incidents, and several parts of the city remain submerged.
Cyclone Michaung Triggers Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
The cyclone is anticipated to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam tomorrow noon. In response to the adverse weather conditions, schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai and adjacent districts remained closed, and private companies were encouraged to facilitate work-from-home arrangements. A public holiday has been declared tomorrow in the affected areas.
Approximately 5,000 relief centers have been established in coastal districts to assist those impacted by the heavy rainfall. Chief Minister MK Stalin has conducted a review of safety measures and is actively monitoring the situation. He urged the public to adhere to safety protocols and avoid unnecessary outings until the storm’s impact subsides.
“The state machinery is prepared to face Cyclone Michaung. Ministers and officials are in the field. The public must adhere to the safety protocols provided. I also request that the public should not come out without essential needs until the impact of the storm subsides,” Chief Minister Stalin stated.
