Malaysia: In Malaysia, an 83-year-old woman passed away after consuming a puffer fish, while her husband is still receiving care in the ICU. The incident occurred on March 25 in Johor, citing a local media site. Ng Ai Lee, the couple’s daughter, claimed that her father bought the puffer fish from a nearby shop, a delicacy known to contain exceptionally deadly poisons.
Husband started exhibiting comparable symptoms
“My parents had been purchasing fish from the same fishmonger for many years, so my father did not think twice about it.” She said. “He would not have purposefully purchased something so dangerous to consume and endanger their lives,” she added. Separately, the woman, named as Lim Siew Guan, started to tremble and have trouble breathing shortly after the couple cleaned and prepared the fish for lunch, according to Ling Tian Soon, head of Johor’s health and unification committee. About an hour later, her husband also started exhibiting comparable symptoms, Mr. Soon continued.

Puffer fish is listed as the cause of death
The couple’s son then hurried them to the hospital, but his mother was declared dead that night. “Food poisoning with neurological manifestation culminating in respiratory failure with cardiac dysrhythmia presumably owing to ciguatera toxin or tetrodotoxin intake” from the puffer fish is listed as the “cause of death,” Mr. Soon added.
