On Thursday, the US State Department advised all American citizens who were traveling or living in Russia to leave immediately. The warning follows the arrest of a Wall Street Journal American correspondent.
The Russian government accused Evan Gershkovich, 31, of spying on Thursday. The Russian security forces claimed to have detained Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, an industrial city in the Urals, on suspicion of spying for the American government by gathering data on “one of the enterprises of Russia’s military-industrial complex,” though they did not specify which one.
Once Gershkovich was arrested, the White House declared that the State Department was in close contact with the Russian government over his incarceration and asked American citizens who were living in or travelling through Russia to leave right away.
“We condemn the detention of Mr. Gershkovich in the strongest terms,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “We also condemn the Russian government’s continued targeting and repression of journalists and freedom of the press.”
