It has been devastating for a US couple to see the new born (with potter syndrome) die after delivery , as US state of Florida law bans abortion at 15 weeks except certain circumstances. The new law was introduced by Florida in July last year as US Supreme Court had struck down nationwide abortion rights.
Introduction of new law had been distressing for Deborah Dorbert, as she became one of the many women having difficulty in accessing necessary abortion procedures.
Media reports have revealed that Dobert and her husband , Lee Dobert were expecting their second child and were told by the doctors that the baby has been diagnosed with a fatal fetal abnormality known as Peter syndrome.
Potter Syndrome
Potter Syndrome is a result of abnormal kidney growth and function. Babies with malfunctioning kidneys can’t remove deadly toxins from their bodies and can in turn experience renal failure.
The absence of amniotic fluid in the womb causes a baby to be born without the ability to breathe. Babies with potter syndrome often die before they are born or end up suffocating within minutes or hours after their delivery.
No abortion access
As soon as the couple’s baby was diagnosed with the synodrome, the couple decided that they would terminate the pregnancy as early as they could. However the new Florida law prevented them from termination until between 28 and 32 weeks.
They were also told to wait until 37th week of gestation. Due to higher travel costs to other states, the couple could not opt for abortion access.
