Diwali 2024: In a unique Diwali 2024 message, India based NASA astronaut Sunita Williams extended her warm wishes from the International Space Station (ISS) to the Hindu community worldwide and to U.S. President Joe Biden. In a video shared by ANI on X (formerly Twitter), Sunita expressed the significance of Diwali from her perspective in space, saying, “Greetings from the ISS. I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world.”
Reflecting on her father’s teachings, Sunita added that Diwali is a time when “goodness in the world prevails,” sharing how her family traditions have kept her connected to her Indian roots. She also thanked President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for recognizing the festival and the contributions of the Indian community.
Fans Show Overwhelming Love, Hope for Williams’ Return
After watching the video, netizens flooded social media with heartfelt reactions. One user wrote, “Wishing you and your colleague a safe return. Happy Diwali!” Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “That’s a great gesture. We all love you, Sunita Williams. Come soon.” A third user commented, “Hope She Comes Back to Celebrate Next Diwali.”
Extended Mission on the ISS
Sunita Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore have been stationed on the ISS since June 6, 2023, after launching on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Originally set as a brief mission, their stay was extended when NASA deemed it too risky to return the Starliner to Earth with crew onboard. Due to this decision, Williams and Wilmore’s mission has been extended by nearly eight months, with their return now scheduled for February 2025.
Diwali Wishes that Crossed Miles and Hearts
With her Diwali message, Sunita Williams has truly inspired a sense of unity and celebration that stretches from space to Earth. Her words have struck a chord with fans, who eagerly await her return and continue to celebrate her achievements and dedication to her heritage.
