Donald Trump: Former President Donald Trump has raised more than $7 million for his election campaign since being indicted in the classified documents case.
Last Thursday, he was charged by a federal prosecutor of illegally holding on to vital national security documents after demitting office. Trump was also indicted of conspiring to obstruct the authorities to get those documents.
This Friday, Trump pleaded not guilty to all the 37 charges pressed by the federal prosecutor, in a Miami court. He has said many times that the Democrats are using the probe agencies of harming his chances of re-election.
Political observers believe that Trump’s rhetoric is helping him raise campaign money from his sympathisers.
An email from the former President to his supporters said,”President Trump Raises Over $6.6 Million and Counting Since Deranged Jack Smith Announced Political Prosecution.” Jack Smith is the federal prosecutor who has indicted Trump.
$2 million just after the arraignment
Politico says the Trump campaign raised over $2 million just hours after his federal arraignment in Miami.
An arraignment is “the process by which an individual is first called to appear before a federal district court and respond to criminal charges.”
On Tuesday, Trump’s campaign team generated $2.1 million from a candlelight dinner in Miami that included top donors and supporters. This dinner also included Sen. Tommy Tuberville, according to an attendee.
Politico also says that Trump raked in $4.5 million in digital fundraising after his federal indictment.
Small donors are the key
Trump watchers say his strength lies in small donors who donate note more than a couple of dollars. However, Trump’s Tuesday fundraiser shows his reach among deep-pocketed donors also.
In the coming days, the ex-U.S. President plans to tap more donors for his 2024 campaign.
