Donald Trump’s Bizarre Salute to Kim Jong Un: A GOP Tug of War

Donald Trump

Former US President, Donald J Trump has once again set the media aflame with his startling comments. In an unexpected move, Trump lauded the infamous North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, following North Korea’s acceptance into the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) executive board. The incident has spurred an uproar among Trump’s Republican compatriots, resulting in widespread backlash.

Blunder at Truth Social

The ex-President chose Truth Social as the platform to air his congratulations. However, in a significant gaffe, he incorrectly spelt the North Korean leader’s name as ‘Kim Jung Un’, rather than the correct ‘Kim Jong Un’. This triggered instant disapproval and criticism from fellow Republicans, notably those holding presidential aspirations.

Republican Outrage Brews

Among the detractors, Nikki Haley, Trump’s former UN ambassador and a potential 2024 contender, highlighted the irony of the situation. She reminded her Twitter followers of Kim’s inhumane treatment of his citizens, citing it as a mockery of North Korea’s influential role in WHO. Brian Kemp, the Governor of Georgia, joined the outcry, insinuating that Trump’s praise of a “murderous dictator” was far from the ideals needed to reclaim the country from President Joe Biden.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former GOP Maryland governor, Larry Page, also vehemently criticized Trump’s message, labeling Kim Jong Un as a threat to peace and freedom. They further emphasized that Trump’s misplaced belief renders him a pawn in China’s strategic game and renders him unfit for the presidency.

A Turbulent Past & Unfolding Drama

Despite his frequent exchange of barbs with Kim during his presidency, Trump started demonstrating a softer approach towards the North Korean autocrat after a historic visit to the isolationist country. This paradigm shift in Trump’s attitude towards Kim has added another layer to the unfolding drama within the GOP.

The appointment of North Korean official, Dr Jong Min Pak to the WHO’s executive board for a three-year term has also drawn a backlash. This move, considered an endorsement of an egregious regime, has been heavily criticised by UN Watch executive director, Hillel Neuer, who has called for urgent reform in the UN body.

Stay tuned as the saga of Trump’s controversial congratulations continues to shake the GOP and the international community.
