Gurpatwant Pannun: In a recent threatening message, separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the founder of the banned group Sikh for Justice (SFJ), warned that travellers should avoid flying with Air India flights between November 1 and November 19, 2024, referring to the 40th anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the possibility of attacks on Air India flights during that time.
This isn’t the first time Gurpatwant Pannun has made such alarming statements. His threats raise important questions about why the US, where Pannun currently resides, remains silent on the matter.
Who is Gurpatwant Pannun and What is Sikh for Justice?
Gurpatwant Pannun is a known Khalistani separatist who operates Sikh for Justice, an organization that has been banned in India. SFJ’s primary goal is to promote the secession of Punjab from India to form an independent Khalistan. Pannun has repeatedly issued provocative statements targeting India, with his latest threat specifically mentioning Air India.
Pannun’s organization is believed to have ties with Pakistan’s ISI, which has been accused of supporting movements aimed at destabilizing India. Despite this, Pannun continues to operate from the United States, using social media platforms to spread his anti-India rhetoric.
Why is the US Silent on Pannun’s Actions?
One of the most puzzling aspects of this situation is the United States’ response—or lack thereof. Pannun, who resides in the US, has been allowed to continue his activities without facing any legal consequences. The US has consistently cited freedom of speech as a reason for not intervening. However, India has voiced its concerns, questioning how a known separatist leader is being allowed to issue such threats from US soil.
US and Canada’s Diplomatic Silence
In addition to the US, Canada has also been under scrutiny. Canada has a significant Sikh population, and pro-Khalistan activities have been reported there as well. Despite being aware of Pannun’s inflammatory statements and the potential security threats, both the US and Canada have largely remained diplomatically quiet.
The reluctance to take action against Pannun is often attributed to both countries’ commitment to upholding freedom of speech. However, critics argue that issuing direct threats to airlines and potentially endangering lives should not be protected under this principle.
India’s Call for Accountability
India has called for stronger action against Pannun and his supporters, urging international governments to prevent the spread of separatist movements. While the US and Canada may not consider SFJ a threat within their borders, the implications of allowing such groups to operate freely have far-reaching consequences for global security.
