EAM Jaishankar: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Sydney to discuss bilateral strategic partnership, economic opportunities between the two countries. However, the talks were not limited to bilateral ties. They also “discussed cricket”, one of the most popular sports played by both countries.
India and Australia are currently playing the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar trophy in New Delhi. The third and fourth Tests will be held in Indore and Ahmedabad, respectively, in March.
Jaishankar takes to Twitter
Jaishankar took to Twitter to share, “Delighted to call on PM @AlboMP of Australia today morning in Kirribilli House in Sydney. Conveyed the personal greetings of PM @narendramodi. Our discussions reflected the full spirit of our strategic partnership. Apprised @AlboMP of recent developments in that regard.”
The minister also did not fail to mention on Twitter that: “P.S.: Of course, discussed cricket :)”
“It was wonderful to meet with @DrSJaishankar this morning ahead of my trip to India next month. We discussed our strategic partnership, economic opportunities and the people-to-people ties that enrich our nations,” Australian Premier Albanese tweeted.
‘India has overcome Covid challenge’
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar addressed the audience at Raisina@Sydney Business Breakfast where he asserted that India has overcome the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic “quite strongly.”
“During the Covid period, we responded using financially sustainable measures. In fact, a lot of reforms were carried out under the pandemic stress. There was a lot of creativity which was also implemented on the field on a large scale, because of the Covid pressures,” he said.
This is Jaishankar’s third Australian visit in the past year — he visited Melbourne last year to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and attended the 13th India-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue (FMFD) in October.
The meeting also comes ahead of the Australian PM’s scheduled trip to India next month as the two countries seek to finalise a trade deal following the interim agreement signed in April 2022.
