Earthquake of magnitude of 5.5 strikes Sulawesi, Indonesia
Earthquake in Sulwesi is the second of its type to hit the country. Earlier in the month, a shallow earthquake had shaken Indonesia’s eastern most province of Papua, which killed four people who were unable to escape when a floating restaurant collapsed into the sea. US Geological Survey has stated that the earth quake measured the magnitude 5.1 and hit residential areas in Jayapura, which wasnear Papua’s northern coast and was centered at a depth of 22 Kilometers. Shallow quakes often cause more damage on the Earth’s surface.
Indonesia is a vast archipelago nation and a home to more than 270 million people, it is also frequently struck by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because it is located in the vicinity of “Ring of fire”, an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean.
