Elon Musk: Pranksters take Twitterati for a ride, pose as axed employees

Elon Musk: Pranksters created quite a buzz on social media after Elon musk took over Twitter and started cleaning up the house. Two mischief makers posed as laid off employees and several media houses including Bloomberg and CNBC, fell for the prank.

The duo were seen leaving the Twitter head office in San Francisco with boxes in hands and claiming they had been axed after Musk takeover. Soon their pictures and videos went viral, and created an uproar on social media.

Ex-engineers

The duo, identified as Rahul Ligma and Daniel Johnson, claimed to be ex-Twitter engineers.  Though soon their prank fell through and people caught on they had been fooled, the damage had damage done. Several journalists posted about Twitter employees leaving the Twitter HQ with boxes of personal belongings in hand. CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa posted that an “entire team of data engineers” had been fired. She later posted a clarification.

Later journalists and Twitterati took to the micro-blogging platform to report the case of fake information.

Elon Musk too came out with a witty reaction to the whole episode and tweeted that “Ligma Johnson had it coming.”

Quite ironic

Paul Lee, a product manager at Twitter, was among those who called out media falling for the prank.

“Quite ironic that a major news outlet failed to do basic diligence and fell for a crisis actor prank, resulting in the spread of misinfo, on the first day of new ownership,” Lee tweeted. “All you had to do was ask to see a badge or look for bird-themed stuff in the boxes. Also, we don’t use Zoom.”

On Wednesday Musk had tweeted a video of himself walking into Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco carrying a kitchen sink. He captioned the video “let that sink in!” He also updated his Twitter description to “Chief Twit.”
