Twitter blue tick: There has been sort of an upheaval on social media after Twiiter CO Elon Musk removed the legacy checkmarks of accounts that refused to subscribe to Twitter Blue. However, the quirky Musk is now returning the precious blue check mark to celebrities even if they are not paying the monthly fee.
In the last couple of days, Twitter was flooded with unverified accounts as many refused to pay the $8 fee for the coveted blue tick. Many celebrities too lost their badge of honor.
No benevolence this
But now it seems Musk doesn’t want celebrities to lose their Blue Tick and is allegedly restoring verification badges to high-profile accounts. But this is no benevolence on Musk’s part. The blue mark of many celebrities was restored after they stood their ground and opted out of the Twitter Blue subscription service.
Profiles of these celebrities show that they have ‘subscribed to Twitter Blue’, even though they have not. Musk made it look like a favor when he said he was paying for the Blue Ticks of LeBron James, Stephen King and William Shatner. But now, it looks like the verification mark is back for all celebrities who have millions of followers.
Dormant accounts too get the blue tick back
Even dormant accounts of celebrities who have passed away show that they are subscribers of Twitter Blue. Some of these accounts are that of late actor Chadwick Boseman, Michael Jackson, Kirstie Alley, John McAfee, Norm Macdonald and Kobe Bryant.
Some celebrities who got back the blue tick without paying are Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, journalist and author Kara Swisher, former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Stephen King.
Hasan Piker wrote, “I have no clue how this happened, i absolutely did not buy twitter blue,” while Kara Swisher expressed her surprise over the move and wrote, “Good lord, I’ve been LeBroned, Shatnered, Kinged without my consent. No means no, boys.”
LeBron James, Stephen King and William Shatner were amongst the first celebrities who got their blue tick back. Musk confirmed paying for these accounts himself.
Give it to charity, says Stephen King
Stephen King, talking about his blue tick, wrote, “My Twitter account says I’ve subscribed to Twitter Blue. I haven’t. My Twitter account says I’ve given a phone number. I haven’t.”
In another tweet, he wrote, “I think Mr. Musk should give my blue check to charity. I recommend the Prytula Foundation, which provides lifesaving services in Ukraine. It’s only $8, so perhaps Mr. Musk could add a bit more.”
Many Bollywood celebrities too including Alia Bhatt, Virat Kohli, Shah Rukh Khan who lost their blue ticks, have got it back now.
