PM Modi: US lawmakers lined up for selfies and autographs with PM Modi after his address at the Congress on Thursday. India Today reports that Mr Modi’s address was one hour long and touched on many topics like Covid-19 vaccination, women’s empowerment, economic growth and Us-India relations. PM Modi also spoke about India’s presidency of G-20.
Many Indian Americans also attended the special session of Congress. Mr Modi was speaking to US lawmakers as part of his state visit to America.
Ovation and applause
Mr Modi received many standing ovations including when he said that the African Union should be given a membership to G-20. “Consideration, care and concern are the need of the hour. Giving a voice to the Global South is the way forward. That is why I firmly believe that the African Union should be given full membership of the G20,” he said while supporting African Union’s membership in G-20.
Speaking in English, Mr Modi said that when he first visited the US as PM, India was the 10th-largest economy in the world. “Today, India is the fifth largest economy in the world and will soon become number 3,” said the PM. The audience gave an ovation after hearing this.
There was laughter in the hall when the PM referred to the Samosa Caucus. The Samosa Caucus refers to an informal and bipartisan grouping of Indian-American Congressmen.

“One of the greatest symbols of democracy”
Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the House of Representatives tweeted, “It was a privilege to welcome Prime Minister @narendramodi to the US Capitol, one of the greatest symbols of democracy in the world. I look forward to increased economic and national security ties between our two great nations.”
After PM Modi’s address, Mr McCarthy requested the latter for an autograph.
