In a closely watched voting session, the European Union’s Parliament gave a green signal to an extensive environmental protection and climate change plan. The plan narrowly survived with a vote of 324-312, highlighting the contentious nature of the initiative.
Setting the Global Benchmark with European Green Deal
The proposed plan is a cornerstone of the much-heralded European Green Deal. The initiative aims to position the European Union at the forefront of climate change and biodiversity targets, setting a global benchmark in tackling environmental issues.
Nature Restoration Targets Key to The Plan
The European Commission, which initially proposed the plan, has put forth mandatory restoration goals for specific habitats and species. By 2030, at least 20% of the European region’s land and sea areas should fall under these restoration targets.
Opposition and Amendments to The Plan
Despite the plan’s approval, the European People’s Party, the legislature’s most significant group, remains opposed to it. The group argues that the plan would negatively impact food security, farmers’ income, and the economy. Following the approval, legislators commenced voting on over 100 amendments aimed at adding flexibility to the plan. The approved amendments will proceed to negotiation with member states, a process that will take several months before finalizing the law.
The EU Parliament’s approval marks a significant milestone in the fight against climate change, despite the opposition and subsequent amendment proposals. This development is indicative of the growing urgency of addressing environmental issues at a global level.
