Donald Trump :William Barr, the ex-attorney general, says “Trump is toast” after getting indicted in a case involving federal classified documents.Barr served under Donald Trump between 2019 and 2020.
The ex-attorney general made these remarks on Fox News Sunday. “I was shocked by the degree of sensitivity of these documents and how many there were, … and I think the counts under the Espionage Act that he willfully retained those documents are solid counts,” Barro told the TV channel on Sunday.
The former President responded to Barr’s remarks by calling him lazy and weak. Trump said on Truth Social that Barr made these remarks because he was dissatisfied. “Turn off Fox News when that “Gutless Pig” is on,” added Trump.
Barr’s remarks are significant because they come on the back of several Republican nomination contenders backing Trump. Ron DeSantis and William Penn have voiced support for the beleaguered ex-President and have termed the Justice Department investigations as biased.
What is the Espionage Act?
Enacted after World War One, this Act prosecutes anyone who holds a U.S. Government classified record.
Through the Espionage Act, the U.S. Government has arrested several Soviet spies as well as whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and Daniel Ellsberg.
An American intelligence official was arrested under this Act was later sentenced to 35 years of jail.
Trump is the first ex-President to have been indicted under the Espionage Act. Now the federal prosecutors must prove that he deliberately didn’t turn over those classified documents to the authorities in order to secure a conviction.
Trump says he is innocent
On the other hand, the ex-President says he is innocent because he had declassified those documents earlier.
However, he there is little evidence that as President, Trump had declassified those papers before demitting office.
