Imran Khan: A court in Islamabad sentenced former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi Khan to seven years in prison and a fine on Saturday. The same court declared in 2018 that their marriage was illegal. Bushra Bibi’s first husband, Khawar Maneka, filed the lawsuit, claiming that she had broken Islamic law by failing to observe the required interval, or Iddat, between marriages.
Serious Allegations
Maneka also charged Khan and his ex-wife of having an adulterous connection before to marriage, a charge that carries a death by stoning penalty. The hearing was held in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, where Khan has been detained since September of last year on several cases, by Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah of Islamabad.
After a lengthy 14-hour session on Friday night, he concluded it. After the four prosecution witnesses were finished being cross-examined on Friday, Khan, 71, and Bibi, 49, filed a joint statement in which they responded to 13 questions.
Previous Conviction
Notably, this is Khan’s third unfavourable decision this week, and it occurs just before Thursday, February 8, the day of the national elections. Khan is not permitted to run for office, though. The decision on Saturday comes after Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, were found guilty of corruption and given a 14-year prison term in a previous case.
A day after the trial concluded, Khan’s attorney, Intisar Panjutha, reported that Judge Qudrat Ullah had announced the verdict. According to AP, Khan and his family maintain that the prosecution is politically driven. However, the prosecution contended that Khan and his spouse had broken the statute requiring a woman to wait three months before being married again. Bibi was a former married woman.
