Canada has launched a new scheme that allows 10,000 H1-B visa holders to come and work in the country. This scheme is likely to help several Indians working in the US and who have been laid off recently. Canada hopes to become a world leader in certain critical technologies by launching this scheme also called Open Work Permit Scheme. As part of this initiative, Canada will also allow dependents of the selected H1-B visa holders to study or work in the country.
Indians to benefit largely
India Today says this scheme will benefit Indians particularly who account for 75% of all the H1-B visa holders in the United States. A Canadian government release said, “Thousands of workers in high-tech fields are employed with companies that have large operations in both Canada and the US, and those working in the US often hold an H-1B speciality occupation visa. As of July 16, 2023, H-1B speciality occupation visa holders in the US, and their accompanying immediate family members, will be eligible to apply to come to Canada.” The statement further said, “They will be able to work for almost any employer anywhere in Canada. Their spouses and dependants will also be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa, with a work or study permit, as needed.”
Benefiting from layoffs
A CNBC report dated January 18 said Amazon, Meta, Google and other tech companies laid off 104,000 employees in the US last year. According to The Economic Times, Indians account for a third of over the roughly 200,000 jobs lost in the United States. Canada’s H1-B visa scheme targets these workers largely. At the end of June this year, Canada also invited occupation-specific immigrants. As part of this scheme, the Canadian government invited 500 healthcare workers to migrate to the country.
