Fatal Blast at Russian Gas Station, Death Toll Climbs to 27

Russia: According to Sergey Mekilov, chairman of the Dagestan Region, the death toll from an explosion at a petrol station in Russia‘s Makhachkala has risen to 27, according to TASS News Agency. “As of 6:00 a.m. local time (3:00 a.m. GMT) on August 15, the tragedy killed 27 people and left 102 injured,” Melikov’s press service quoted him as saying.

Explosion Outside Petrol Station Ignites 600 Square Metre Fire, Investigation Underway

The regional boss reported that three children were among those who perished. On Monday night in Makhachkala, the explosion happened in front of a petrol station. Following that, a 600 square metre fire broke out in the vicinity. The unattended fire was put out. Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, claimed earlier in a press conference that the explosion happened across from the petrol station. According to TASS, Melikov stated that “causes and nature” of the explosion are being determined.

Battling Flames and Ensuring Safety

According to the press reports, two out of every eight fuel tanks blew up. 20 pieces of equipment and more than 70 people were used to put out the fire. Due to the possibility of a second explosion, police and local officials were directing people away from the scene. An inspection has reportedly been carried out in relation to the filling station fire, according to the regional prosecutor’s office, as reported by TASS. Viktor Fisenko, the first deputy head of the Russian Health Ministry, arrived in Dagestan as senior Dagestani officials gathered at the scene of the incident.
