After Morocco shocked Belgium in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, riots have broken out in Belgium and Dutch cities. Morocco immigrant fans in Belgium took to the streets to celebrate the victory but they chanted some derogatory slogans against Belgium fans. This led to a massive outbreak between the fans of the two teams.
Belgian police have detained more than a dozen protesters who took to streets post-World Cup game.
Meanwhile, Brussels Mayor Philippe Close urged people to stay away from the city center.
Police urge for peace
“I condemn in the strongest terms the incidents of this afternoon. The police have already firmly intervened. I, therefore, advise against fans coming to the city center. The police are doing all they can to maintain public order. I have ordered the police to carry out arrests of the troublemakers,” Close tweeted.
“Around 7 p.m. calm returned and preventive patrols remain in place in the sectors concerned,” police spokesperson Ilse Van de Keere said.

The riots took place in several places across the Belgian capital where dozens of soccer fans, some draped in Moroccan flags, clashed with riot police with water cannons and tear gas.
“The rioters used pyrotechnic material, projectiles, sticks, and set fire on the public highway,” the police said.
