Pakistan: On Thursday, Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan extended his wishes on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha to his countrymen and said that this year festivities of Eid are ‘most painful’ for him. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman stated that 10,000 of his supporters are being treated as prisoners for attacking military and government buildings following his arrest in a corruption case in May last month.
Khan took to Twitter saying “For me, this is the most painful Eid. Nearly 10,000 of our activists and supporters have been jailed while being treated like criminals for exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest.”
Khan’s arrest and protest
Imran Khan was arrested on May 9 in the Al-Qadir corruption case by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from the premises of Islamabad High Court. Following his arrest, his supporters took to street and allegedly burned down more than 20 military installations and civilian residences.
Describing events of protest Khan stated in his tweet “Our brave leaders, including women leaders like Dr Yasmin Rashid and Alia Hamza etc., continue to refuse to be jailed and disaffiliated from Tehreek-e-Insaaf.” Khan further added “Sixteen of our workers were shot and martyred, while the other 8 are suspected to have been killed, but this cannot be confirmed because their loved ones and friends are underground for fear of the police. 50 others were also shot,”
Khan has alleged that no independent investigation was conducted to highlight use of excessive force by Pakistani army during the clampdown.
‘Nation will come out of this dark phase’
Imran Khan further wrote that by grace of almighty the nation and his party PTI will come out of this dark phase. Khan has been demanding early elections in hopes of returning back to power.
He has stated that current regime of Pakistan is also undermining rights of journalists and invoked Imran Riaz Khan’s example of arrest and his disappearance since last 40 days. The term of current Pakistan assembly is due for expiring in August this year.
