Mike Pence: ANI reports that former Vice President Mike Pence will contest the 2024 Presidential elections. Quoting The Hill, ANI says Pence filed his nomination on Monday, June 5.
Pence’s entry makes the exercise for the Republican nomination more exciting. Besides his one-time boss Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott are also in the race. The former Vice President will officially launch his campaign on June 7 in Des Moines, Iowa, which also happens to be his 64th birthday.
Many observers think that Pence would dip into the social conservative vote bank without leaning on the populism that Trump promoted during his tenure as President.
According to Wikipedia, social conservatism is the political ideology that supports the preservation of morality and social values in American society.
What is Pence’s stand?
According to the Hindu, Mike Pence opposes abortion rights and “supports a national ban on the procedure.” He has also opposed transgender-affirming rights in schools.
The former VP supports Ukraine against Russia and wants more aid to be given to Kyiv. In the past, Pence has criticized the “Putin apologists” in the Republican Party.
Pence describes himself as a “Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order,” and has visited several churches while delivering policy speeches and attracting donors. The Presidential hopeful has also visited early-voting states like New Hampshire, South Carolina and Iowa to drum up support.
A loyal ally
As Vice President, Pence was a valuable asset to the ex-President. He laid down the groundwork for the vaccination programme in the United States, thereby saving several thousand lives.
This relationship soured after January 6, 2021, when the outgoing President tried to convince Pence that he could overturn the results of the election.
