Surprisingly, the far-right party that had been leading the polls was surpassed by the left-wing alliance in France during the second round of parliamentary elections. As a result of this change, the left-wing alliance now holds most of seats, with President Emmanuel Macron’s party expected to come in second, perhaps creating a hung parliament.
Left-Wing Bloc Emerges as Major Force
The hard left, the Greens, the Socialists, and France Unbowed are members of the leftist alliance called the Popular Front. Survey firms predict that this coalition will win between 184 and 198 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly, short of the 289 majority threshold. The far-right National Rally is predicted to win 135–143 seats, while Macron’s centrist alliance is predicted to pick up 160–169 seats.
Celebrations and Clashes in Paris
As the official results began to come in, celebrations by left-wing supporters quickly turned chaotic. Riots erupted in Paris, particularly at Place de la Republique, where demonstrators clashed with police. Videos on social media showed riot police using teargas and arresting several protesters as Molotov cocktails and smoke bombs were thrown.
A United Front Against the Far-Right
The Popular Front’s unexpected alliance was formed to prevent the far-right from securing an outright victory after the National Rally’s impressive performance in the first round. This coalition has pledged to reverse Macron’s pension reforms and introduce a “right to retire” at 60 years.
Political Repercussions for Macron
The election results are a significant setback for President Macron, who called the snap election to reaffirm his political control. Voters, however, expressed their dissatisfaction with the ongoing cost of living crisis and declining public services by supporting the far-right in the first round. Despite their loss, the National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, gained ground by broadening their appeal and distancing themselves from their controversial past.
Future of Governance in France
Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Melenchon has urged Macron to allow the Popular Front to govern, emphasizing that the election mandate should be respected. However, he has ruled out forming a coalition with other left-wing parties, leaving uncertainty about the future government. Raphael Glucksmann of the Socialist Party called for the alliance to engage in negotiations, urging maturity in this critical period.
