France Protests: Emmanuel Macron has cancelled his two-day trip to Germany in the wake of continuing protests and rioting in France. Earlier this Emmanuel Macron faced scathing attacks for his attendance at Elton John’s concert in Paris. Meanwhile the 17 year old teen Nahel Merzouk whose death sparked widespread protests was buried in a private ceremony on Saturday.
In Marsielle, clashes between police and rioters continued at La Canebière, t in the heart of the city. As per local media police and rioters were locked down in hours long fighting on Saturday evening.
Nahel laid to rest
Amidst chaos of riots and violent clashes, Nahel Merzouk was laid to rest in private ceremony attended by family, friends and relatives at a cemetery in Nanterre. As French government prepared to face another wave of protests throughout country, a crowd gathered outside the local mosque in Nanterre. They followed coffin to the graveyard chanting ‘Justice for Nahel.’
Media personnel were asked by Lawyers for relatives to stay away from ceremony as it was “a day for Nahel’s family” to mourn “with discretion.”
Protest continue to rage on
The rioters have attacked private buildings, vehicles, sports and leisure centers as well as schools in nearly a week of protests and looting. The justice minister, Éric Dupond-Moretti has stated that legal methods will now be employed to extract details of those who are coordinating pillaging and rioiting from social media platforms. He stated “Young people have to know we will find these accounts. This cannot go on. If you call on your friends to take part in smashing something up, that’s potentially a criminal association. If you are present at a ransacking, even if you’re not actually doing anything wrong, you are potentially taking part in a criminal association and encouraging others.”
Meanwhile UN high commissioner for human rights (OHCHR) has criticized French policing, stating that shooting had provided France a time to reflect on ” the deep issues of racism and racial discrimination in law enforcement”.
