France Protests: France has been burning in riots for consecutive nights instigated by killing of Nahel M. by a police officer. The 17 year old teenager of Algerian descent was shot on Tuesday morning in Nanterre Suburb of Paris. Videos of Nahel’s encounter with police was widely circulated triggering protest across major centers of France. The incident has been cited as racial profiling by police as it occurred in low-income and multi-ethnic part if the city. The boy is survived by his mother who has alleged “The officer saw an Arab face, a little kid, and wanted to take his life.”
The investigation has revealed “the conditions for the legal use of the weapon were not met.”
Nahel’s background
Nahel was the only child raised by single mother Mounia. Nahel’s education has been described as unstable with low attendance at a college in Suresneas. The boy hoped to become an electrician. While there were no criminal records of Nahel, he had frequent brushes with the police. Although he violated traffic rules, the small offence cost him his life.
Nahel was an active member of the Rugby club Pirates of Nanterre. The club was run by Ovale Cityoen, an organization that helped impoverished teenagers find apprenticeship. Nahel’s skills and dedication towards Rugby earned him praises and high regard.
“My best friend” and “my everything
Nahel is survived by his mother, Mouina. She hailed from North African Arab country of Algeria. She stated that she was “revolted” by the circumstances of his untimely but she refuses to blame all of the police like so many others. “I blame one person: the one who took the life of my son,” she said. She referred to her son as “my best friend” and “my everything”. She also stated that he was her ‘everything’ and her life was completely devoted to him.
The killing of an unarmed minority by police official and subsequent protest in France is being equated with Black Lives Matter movement that erupted after killing of George Floyd.
