Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, is in hot water after a video of him drinking beer with Toulouse’s rugby players went viral. After the game ended on Saturday at the Stade de France in Paris, the president was seen in a video on French TV stations and online receiving a bottle of Corona. Macron sat in the VIP section to watch the game.
Macron’s Beer-Downing Video Fuels Political Debate
A political debate regarding binge drinking and claims of “toxic masculinity” has been triggered by the video.
The 45-year-old is then shown downing the beer in 17 seconds as Toulouse’s players and coaching staff applaud him after Toulouse defeated La Rochelle in the French Top 14 championship final. Following the video’s virality, Greens party lawmaker Sandrine Rousseau tweeted, “Toxic masculinity in political leadership in one image.”

When Macron was filmed having a beer in Kinshasa in March, during the French pensions crisis, he was accused of being cut off from ordinary concerns back home, The Guardian reported. Emmanuel Macron is a devoted sports fan who is well known for visiting French sports teams’ locker rooms. He often has a glass of wine in his hand, as do the majority of French presidents, and once said he drank one during lunch and one at night. According to a source, he has also defended the wine and alcohol industry by opposing efforts by public health officials to promote “Dry January.”
