Giorgia Meloni: Italy Elects A Female Prime Minister For The First Time In History

Giorgia Meloni: Based on preliminary results released on Monday, Giorgia Meloni won an overwhelming majority in the Italian election held on Sunday, making her the country’s first female prime minister and leading the most right-wing administration since World War II.

According to projections based on results from almost two-thirds of polling places, her euroskeptic Brothers of Italy party won the election on Sunday.

The 45-year-old made the following statement during her victory speech: “If we are asked to lead this country, we will do it for everyone, for all Italians, and with the intention of uniting the people”.

“Italy chose us. We will not betray (the country) as we never have.”

With the aid of Ms. Meloni’s right-wing and center-right friends, the building of a ruling coalition may take weeks.

After speaking with party leaders, Italy’s president grants the order to try to form a government.

Mario Draghi, the former president of the European Central Bank, remains in office in a caretaker capacity.

Ms. Meloni has firmly endorsed arming Ukraine in order for it to repel an invasion by Russia.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of the right-wing League and a fervent supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin before the war, has expressed fear that western sanctions may wind up harming Italy’s economic interests more than they may harm Russia’s.

“Italy selected us. We won’t betray (the nation) the way we always have.

Another ardent Putin supporter and former premier, Silvio Berlusconi, has said that his participation in a coalition of the center-right bloc would ensure that Italy remains securely anchored in the EU and one of its most dependable members.

Ms. Meloni has resisted Mr. Salvini’s call to increase already-heavy Italy’s indebtedness by tens of billions of euros in order to provide energy relief as individuals and companies struggle with staggeringly high energy costs as winter approaches.

Europe was eagerly watching what kind of government the third-largest economy in the eurozone may get in light of Ms. Meloni’s criticism of “Brussels bureaucrats” and her connections to other right-wing leaders.

However, averting the country’s impending energy crisis, which was brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is the toughest issue. The European Central Bank was forced to increase the yield on Italy’s 10-year bonds from less than 1% in December of last year to over 4.3% as a result of rising spending as a result of price increases.
