Global Peace Index 2023: The Institute of Economics and Peace found have unveiled their Global Peace Index report for 2023. As per the index, the world of 2023 is a little less safer than last year. The average level of global peacefulness has deteriorated by 0.42 %.
India has showcased improvements in handling violent crime, diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries and enhanced political instability. India is ranked 126th comapred to 128th with 3.5 per cent improvement in overall measure. According to the report “The improvement on the neighbouring countries relations indicator occurred because of fewer incidences of cross border violence and ceasefire violations with Pakistan and China in 2022.” The reduction in geopolitical tensions with China has contributed significantly to improvement in India’ ranking, Reduction in situations of social unrest has also led to an improvement on the political instability indicator.
The report findings
Iceland has maintained its position as the most peaceful country for the consecutive 15th time. It is followed by Demark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria at the top. Out of the 10 most peaceful countries, seven countries are from the European continent.
As per the report, Afghanistan has been ranked as the least peaceful country in the world for the eighth consecutive time and is followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In the last 15 years the average level of peacefulness has shown improvement only twice on a year-on-year basis. During the past year 79 countries have showcased improvement while 84 nations had their position deteriorated at the same time.
The report states “This is the thirteenth deterioration in peacefulness in the last fifteen years, with 84 countries improving and 79 deteriorating in peacefulness in 2022.” It is the ninth consecutive year of deterioration in global peacefulness and 13th since the report was first unveiled in 2008.
The Report measures
The Global Peace Index covers a total of 163 countries comprising 99.7 per cent of the world’s population, measuring countries across 3 main domains that include societal safety and security
,ongoing domestic and international conflict and militarization. As Iceland is an isolated and prosperous European nation with no pending conflicts and no standing army, its situation is perfectly aligned with measures of the report. The report also analyses current conflicts and potential future conflicts like overall impact of a potential Taiwan blockade by China.
The war in Ukraine has made a significant impact on global peacefulness. Ukraine and Russia have the largest and fifth largest deteriorations in their peacefulness index respectively. The Haiti, Mali, and Israel are other countries with largest deteriorations.
