Climate activist Greta Thunberg was forcibly evicted by the police from a protest site in Sweden on Monday.
On June 19, the 20-year old activist blocked the traffic at the Malmo harbour. She was taken into custody and later produced in a court on Monday.
Pleaded not guilty
Thunberg told the Malmo court that while she disobeyed police orders by obstructing traffic at the harbour, she did this act out of necessity. Thunberg pleaded not guilty in the court.
The court fined Thunberg more than Euro 2,000 in proportion to her earnings.
The climate activist protested the court’s ruling saying, “It is absurd that those who act in line with science should pay the price for it.” She also told the court, “I believe that we are in an emergency that threatens life, health and property. Countless people and communities are at risk both in the short term and in the long term.”
After her sentencing, Greta Thunberg again headed back to the Malmo harbour and started her protest against fossil fuels. The police carried her away from the protest site.
Disobeying police orders can result in a six-month jail term in Sweden.
‘Laws have to be changed’
Thunberg said her sentencing was unacceptable. She told the reporters, “We are definitely not going to back down because of this.”
“We don’t have any laws that long term protect us against the self-destructing greed that we have let [have] full control over the world. The laws have to be changed. We know that we cannot save the world by playing by the rules..,” the climate activist added.
One of the protesters, Irma Kjellström, justified their protest at the Malmo port.
“It’s even more clear than it would have been otherwise that we have to be exactly where the harm is being done, that we have to be out in the oil ports defending our lives,” Kjellstrom said.
