Vladimir Putin: A few hours after Pyongyang launched two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin met at the Vostochny Cosmodrome. Kim arrived at the cosmodrome in the eastern Amur region of Russia on Wednesday morning, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, just minutes after Putin.
Kim Jong Un and Putin’s Handshake in Russia
According to a video from the Kremlin, the two men shook hands when they first met. According to Russian official media, Kim thanked Putin for the offer to visit Russia “despite being busy” and Putin told him he was “very glad to see” him. Potential weapons sales are expected to be discussed during the Kim-Putin discussions, which will also feature senior military and arms industry representatives. Putin told state media reporters that “all issues” were up for negotiation and that Russia will assist North Korea in developing satellites as he guided Kim around the cosmodrome.
Ukraine’s War and Weaponry Acquisition
Putin has a chance to obtain crucial weapons for Russia’s war in Ukraine during the meeting, and Kim is anticipated to demand financial support and military technology in exchange. Shortly before the conference started, South Korea and Japan reported that they had seen two short-range ballistic missiles launch from North Korea’s east coast. The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea claimed to have detected the launches between approximately 11.43am (02:43 GMT) and 11.53am (02:53 GMT) from a region in or near Sunan, close north of Pyongyang, and that it was examining the data.
Military Vigilance and Cooperation with the US
“Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for further launches, while maintaining full readiness by closely cooperating with the US,” the JCS said in a statement. Japan has protested North Korea through diplomatic channels in Beijing, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno. The two missiles landed in the water outside of Japan’s EEZ, he continued. “Fascinating: a launch without Kim Jong (Un) in the country. A first,” US-based security analyst Ankit Panda wrote on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.
