Domestic Violence: A series of high-profile domestic violence cases in China are forcing the country’s youth to question marriage.
In the latest instance of domestic violence in China, a man drove his car over his wife several times because of a marriage dispute. The video, which was shot by an eyewitness, shows the husband stopping his car and checking whether his wife was dead. This incident occurred in the Shandong province.
The husband and wife were 37 and 38 years, respectively.
By Wednesday last week, this video was trending on Weibo (China’s Twitter), attracting 300 million views.
Recurring cases of violence
Last month, a man killed his wife and sister-in-law because of a marital dispute. According to CNN, the wife had suffered years of domestic violence and was planning a divorce.
In another case which occurred last week, a woman described her ordeal on social media. She said she spent several weeks in a hospital after being attacked by her husband. He assaulted her after coming to know that she was planning a divorce due to domestic violence.
The woman said she was attacked 16 times by her spouse in their two years of marriage.
These cases, in part, are contributing to a rapid decline in marriages in China.
Sharp decline
According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the number of Chinese people getting married for the first time has fallen by 41% from 2013 to 2019.
While this decline is due to China’s policy of reducing its birth rate, it is also because many Chinese women think that marriage fosters gender inequality.
Some Chinese women have also attacked married women on social media and called them “married donkeys.”
Xiao Meili, a social media influencer who once walked 12,000 miles to reform China’s marriage laws, says this kind of online abuse only shows the weakness in the marriage institution.
