Imran Khan: A Pakistan government minister has said that former PM Imran Khan will be tried under military rules for inciting attacks on army establishments on May 9.
Rana Sanaullah, the country’s Interior Minister told Dawn News that Khan had instigated large-scale attacks on the Pak army’s establishments. The minister was responding to Dawn’s questions about whether Khan would be tried in a military court.
Sanaullah further said there was no doubt Khan orchestrated these attacks.
“Absolutely, why shouldn’t it? The programme that he made to target the military installations and then had it executed, in my understanding it absolutely is a case of a military court,” said the minister while arguing that Khan was indeed the architect of the May 9 attacks.
What were the May 9 attacks?
Imran Khan was arrested by Pakistan Rangers on May 9 on charges of corruption. Following his arrest, PTI supporters attacked several army establishments, including Jinnah House- the residence of the Lahore-based Corps Commander.
PTI supporters also attacked the ISI headquarters and the head office of the Pakistan Army. These attacks were construed as terrorist activity and the government is thinking whether Imran Khan should be tried under the Army Act. Khan may be jailed or even sentenced to death under this law.
The former Pakistan PM has offered to talk to “whoever is in power” to reduce tensions in the country. Khan’s offer has been rejected by a top Pakistan government minister.
IMF steps in
Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has commented on these incidents. Its Pakistan head has said the government must follow the due process of law.
Pakistan has been requesting the IMF for a bailout. So far, there’s been no decision on the bailout package which will help Pakistan avoid defaulting on its loans in June.
