NASA: On Sunday, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) used its OSIRIS-REx mission to deposit Bennu sample material on Earth. It is the first US mission to take an asteroid sample. As the space agency brought rock samples to the planet, the US created history. The spacecraft’s seven-year mission came to a conclusion with this.
Nasa’s OSIRIS-REx Unlocks Solar System’s Time Capsule
“This marks the US’s first sample return mission of its kind and will open a time capsule to the beginnings of our solar system,” Nasa said in a tweet on Sunday, After the sample capsule touched down in the Utah test and training range. The spaceship, which travelled 1.2 billion miles across space, was planned to land safely on a surface in the Utah desert.
A Mission from Cape Canaveral to Bennu’s Bounty
OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) was sent to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu on September 8, 2016, from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Base. The samples that were gathered weigh more than 250 grammes and are in perfect shape. Scientists anticipate that these materials will give them important information about the formation of our solar system. The mission will aid in determining the long-term dangers of Bennu-type near-Earth asteroids colliding with Earth.
