India- Canada Relation: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India has issued an advisory to television channels, urging them to refrain from offering a platform to individuals who face charges of serious crimes, including terrorism, or belong to organizations that have been proscribed by Indian law.
Background:
This advisory comes in response to a recent incident where a television channel hosted a discussion featuring an individual located in a foreign country. This individual is facing multiple criminal charges, including involvement in terrorism, and is associated with an organization that has been banned in India. During the discussion, the person made statements that were considered detrimental to India’s sovereignty and integrity, posed potential threats to the country’s security, and could harm India’s friendly relations with foreign states. Furthermore, the comments had the potential to disrupt public order within the nation.
Balance of Media Freedom and Responsibility:
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting emphasized that while the government upholds media freedom and respects its rights as enshrined in the Constitution, it is crucial for TV channels to ensure that the content they broadcast complies with the provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. This includes adherence to sub-section (2) of Section 20 of the Act.
This advisory underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between media freedom and the responsibility to prevent content that may incite criminal activities or jeopardize national security, sovereignty, and public order.
