In a move signaling a potential thaw in diplomatic tensions, India has resumed the issuance of electronic visas for Canadian nationals. The electronic visas, which include Entry visa, Business visa, Medical visa, and Conference visa, were reinstated on October 26 after a temporary suspension. The decision comes after a diplomatic row initiated by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of possible Indian government involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh separatist leader, on June 18 in British Columbia.
India Resumes E-Visa Services for Canadians Amid Diplomatic Thaw
Tensions between India and Canada had escalated following Trudeau’s accusations, prompting India to designate Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. The resumption of e-visa services is viewed as a positive step toward normalizing diplomatic relations and reducing strains between the two nations.
The move highlights India’s willingness to address concerns and engage in constructive dialogue, fostering an environment conducive to improved bilateral relations. While the resumption of e-visa issuance may not completely resolve the underlying issues, it reflects a diplomatic effort to promote understanding and cooperation between India and Canada. As both countries navigate their diplomatic relations, the reinstatement of electronic visa services is a practical measure facilitating people-to-people exchanges and fostering positive engagement.
