India Canada Relations: India Resumes Visa Services in Canada Following Safety Concerns

India Canada Relations: India’s High Commission in Canada has announced the resumption of some visa services with effect from October 26, 2023. The decision comes after a temporary halt in visa issuances due to safety concerns for Indian diplomats. The High Commission stated that its consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver will restart visa services for entry visas, business visas, medical visas, and conference visas.

India Resumes Visa Services in Canada Following Safety Concerns

The suspension of visa services in Canada was prompted by security concerns, with Indian diplomats facing potential risks while conducting their visa-related work. Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, emphasized the primary reason for the temporary visa suspension was the safety and security of Indian diplomatic personnel.

Tensions have strained relations between India and Canada, particularly following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding the involvement of “agents of the Indian government” in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). These allegations were strongly rejected by India as “absurd” and “motivated.”

India temporarily suspended visa issuances to Canadian citizens

As a result of the diplomatic discord, India temporarily suspended visa issuances to Canadian citizens and requested that Canada reduce its diplomatic presence in India. The resumption of visa services marks a step towards normalizing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
