India Canada Relations: The resumption of visa issuance to Canadians for travel to India is not imminent, as diplomatic and consular functions are still impeded by security concerns, according to India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma. While he expressed the possibility of relaxing the existing Indian visa regime for Canadians if there are positive signs of improved security conditions for Indian diplomats and consular officials in Canada, Verma pointed out that pro-Khalistan elements continue to pose security threats.
- Visa Issuance for Canadians to India Delayed Due to Security Concerns
Anti-India activities by a small number of inimical elements in Canada, such as pro-Khalistan groups like Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), are a primary concern. These elements have targeted India’s senior diplomats and missions, organizing rallies and labeling key Indian figures as ‘Enemies of Canada.’ SFJ’s agenda includes the upcoming Khalistan Referendum in Surrey on October 29.
- Canada has responded by providing personal security details to diplomats
Canada has responded by providing personal security details to diplomats and increasing mission coverage. However, Verma emphasized that while security measures have been taken, the security environment is still not conducive to the normal conduct of diplomatic and consular functions by all Indian diplomats and officials.
The delay in visa resumption stems from the safety concerns of Indian personnel in Canada. India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has highlighted the need for improved security for Indian diplomats and the resumption of visa issuances, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of Indian officials and the diplomatic mission.
