India Canada Relation: New Delhi and Ottawa remain locked in a diplomatic standoff, with relations hitting a historic low during the Justin Trudeau government’s tenure. A recent survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute (ARI) and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada sheds light on Canadians' perception of the issue, revealing significant dissatisfaction with how ties are being managed.
Canadians Divided Over Responsibility for Strained Relations
According to the survey, 39% of Canadians believe the Trudeau administration has poorly managed relations with India, while 32% disagree. The remaining 29% are uncertain about where the responsibility lies. While there is no clear consensus on the primary culprit, a larger portion of the blame seems directed at the Canadian government.
Pessimism About Improvement Under Current Leadership
The survey also highlighted skepticism about the future of bilateral ties. Nearly 39% of respondents believe that relations between the two nations will not improve as long as Justin Trudeau remains Prime Minister. In comparison, 34% hold a similar view about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Prospects for Change in 2025 Elections
Canada’s upcoming parliamentary elections in 2025 could mark a turning point. The Opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, is currently favoured to win. If elected, Poilievre would have the opportunity to reset India-Canada relations, offering hope for a fresh diplomatic approach.
This survey underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to mend ties, as public sentiment reflects growing frustration and concern over the current impasse.
