Pakistan: PTI has reported that India summoned a senior Pakistani High Commission official over the targeted killings of Sikhs in that country. New Delhi has lodged a strong protest in this regard.
Last week, Manmohan Singh was killed in Peshawar by unidentified gunmen. Singh was on his way from Rashid Garhi to Peshawar when he was fired upon by gunmen. He later died in a hospital.
This was the second attack on Sikhs in the last 4 days. On Friday, another Sikh was attacked in Peshawar. This Sikh sustained injuries on his legs.
PTI quoted an MEA source as saying, “India has demanded that Pakistani authorities investigate these violent attacks on the Sikh community with sincerity and share the investigation reports.”
The source added, “It has also been conveyed that Pakistan should ensure the safety and security of its minorities, who live in constant fear of religious persecution.”
“Some suspects have been arrested”
Peshawar Police Chief Ashfaq Anwar told reporters that some suspects have been arrested. He also said that the real accused would shortly be arrested by the police. Peshawar Police are investigating all the angles connected to Manmohan Singh’s murder.
According to several sources, four cases of targeted killings of Sikhs have happened in Pakistan from April to June this year.
Religious persecution
There are just 15,000-20,000 Sikhs in Pakistan, most of whom live in Peshawar. They have been repeatedly persecuted by Islamic fundamentalists.
Most Pakistani Sikhs are businessmen and shopkeepers.
Human Rights activists say Pakistani Sikhs are abducted and sometimes forcefully converted by the fundamentalists.
Hindus are the largest minority in Pakistan and number 7.5 million. Like Sikhs, Pakistani Hindus also face religious persecution in that country. Every year, scores of young Hindu girls are abducted and married off to wealthy landlords in Sind.
