Khalistani March: The Indian government has told Canada to stop the Khalistan Freedom Rally to the Indian Commission in Ottawa on July 8. New Delhi has also requested Ottawa to protect the lives of its diplomats stationed in Canada.
According to a poster published on social media, a Khalistani outfit is holding this rally in the memory of a slain terrorist, Harjeet Singh Nijjar.
Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurudwara in Canada in June. His killers have not been found yet.
Harjeet Singh Nijjar was behind a conspiracy to kill a Hindu priest in Jalandhar, Punjab in 2021. The National Intelligence Agency had declared a cash award of Rs. 10 lakhs to anyone who could help the agency get Nijjar.
Threat to Indian diplomats
The poster displays the faces of two officials of the High Commission- Sanjay Kumar Verma and Apoorva Srivastava- and calls them the “faces of Shaheed Nijjar’s killers in Toronto.”
Nijjar was the leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force and one of the 40 terrorists whose names have been published by the Indian government.
India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma told Hindustan Times that the Khalistanis are “attempting to cause harm to Indian envoys”, which may not be the intention of the Canadian law and constitution.
EAM responds
External Affair Minister, S Jaishankar has also taken note of this rally. He told reporters, “We have requested our partner countries like Canada, the US, the K and Australia, to not give space to the Khalistanis. This will affect our relations. We will raise this poster issue with the governments of these countries.”
Last month, the minister warned Canada and the UK to stop letting Khalistanis use their territories for anti-India propaganda. In May, Khalistanis had pulled down the Indian flag at the Indian High Commission.
