Using a stolen AK-47 assault rifle, an off-duty police officer in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, shot and killed a 39-year-old Indian moneylender. According to reports, the event was motivated by a loan of 2.1 million shillings (about Rs 46,000).
Ivan Wabwire, 30, was captured by Kampala Metropolitan Police on May 12 after he fired several rounds of bullets at Uttam Bhandari.
Wabwire’s close-range attack was evident in horrific video taken at the crime site, according to the Kampala-based publication Daily Monitor. The investigators have confirmed that Wabwire’s client was Bhandari, the director of TFS Financial Services.
The amount the policeman owed to the company was a point of contention between the two. Wabwire reportedly got into a fight with Bhandari on May 12 after learning the loan amount (2.1 million shillings) and asserting that it was exaggerated.
Patrick Onyango, a spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, told the Daily Monitor that after shooting Bhandari, Wabwire dropped his AK-47 gun and ran away.
13 cartridges have been found by police at the location of the crime.
Wabwire has a history of mental instability, and after being repeatedly admitted to a hospital due to the breakdown, he was banned from owning a firearm five years ago, according to authorities.
According to the story, Wabwire, who is currently arrested the Busia police station in eastern Uganda, took the revolver from a flatmate and fellow police officer.
Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, the deputy inspector general of police, visited with the Indian community in Uganda and reassured them of their safety, according to the news portal Nile Post.
